Dr Matt Brown
Clinical Psychologist
I’m Dr Matt Brown, a UK-trained Clinical Psychologist based in Melbourne, providing telehealth therapy across Australia.
I have particular expertise in working with people living with and beyond cancer, long-term medical conditions, LGBTQ+ clients, and adults with innate variations of sex characteristics (intersex).
I also support adults experiencing anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, and challenges with personal life transitions.
I have over 20 years of experience across mental and physical health services in the UK and Australia, including specialist hospital work at University College London Hospitals and The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne.

I offer a compassionate, evidence-based, and collaborative approach to therapy, creating a space where personal issues can be explored safely and without judgement.
About me
I’m a Clinical Psychologist with over 20 years experience working across mental health and physical health settings in both the UK and Australia. My aim is to offer a safe, respectful, and non-judgmental space where people feel able to speak openly and explore what matters most to them.

A central focus of my work is supporting people living with physical illness, including cancer and chronic health conditions. I have extensive experience working in cancer centres in leading public hospitals in London and Melbourne and continue to work at The Alfred Hospital as a specialist in cancer psychology (psycho-oncology). My practice includes working with the emotional, psychological, and relational challenges that can accompany a diagnosis, medical treatment, survivorship, and uncertainty about the future. This may include anxiety, low mood, grief, changes in identity, sexuality, relationship strain, or the impact of illness on everyday life and sense of self.
Alongside this work, I support individuals more generally experiencing a wide range of concerns, including anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship difficulties, grief and loss, and significant life transitions. I also offer couples therapy for those navigating complex dynamics or seeking to strengthen connection, communication, and understanding.
Supporting the wellbeing of LGBTQIA+ communities is a core part of my practice. As part of my private practice, over the past 15 years I’ve worked with people who identify as part of the LGBTQIA+ communities around issues of identity, sexuality, relationships, parenting, belonging, and the impact of minority stress. I also have experience providing therapeutic support to people who have innate variations of sex characteristics (intersex)and have worked alongside organisations supporting intersex, trans, and queer communities. I’m committed to offering an affirming, inclusive, and culturally sensitive therapeutic space.
My approach to therapy is evidence-based and flexible. I have specialist training in and draw upon Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), alongside Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT). I also incorporate ideas from Systemic and Narrative therapies where helpful. I work collaboratively with each person, tailoring therapy to their needs, values, and goals, and supporting change at a pace that feels right for them.

Adjusting to and managing cancer and long-term physical health conditions can be emotionally and mentally taxing. Psychological interventions can be integral to helping people cope with the psychological impact of ill health, providing tools and support to improve quality of life and mental health. This includes support with managing anxiety, grief, changes in role, and the complex emotions that often accompany diagnosis and treatment.

People who have survived childhood and adolescent cancers often face late effects due to the illness and long-term impacts of cancer treatments. These late effects include emotional, psychological, and social aspects of wellbeing. Some common challenges may include anxiety and fear of recurrence, depression and emotional distress, neurocognitive late-effects, body image and identity challenges, social and relationship difficulties, PTSD symptoms, fertility and issues with sexual functioning, and challenges around employment. Specialist psychological therapy can help process the experience of living with the effects cancer, support the management of late-effects of treatment, help develop coping strategies, and enhance quality of life.
